Shadows shift over the course of the day and the year; colors change in intensity and hue in line with light conditions and the angle from which the pergola is viewed. The hum of a swarm of fictive insects emanates from the structure and the surrounding facades, varying in intensity and composition. “Solfångare och Ljustbrytare” (Suncatcher/Lightbreaker) is a two-part permanent public artwork by Secretary and sound artist Åsa Stjerna, which streches across three courtyards that are surrounded by assisted living apartments, apartments for older adults, and a municipal office, in Tensta, Stockholm. Replacing, adding to, and enriching the standardized architectural elements and experiences that characterize “welfare landscapes" such as this, the work explores sunlight as a shared resource for ecology, life, and social space.
