BARACKBOENDET/ ON BARRACKS
LIV OCH BOSTÄDER I UNDANDTAGSTILLSTÅND/ DWELLING IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY EDITED BY HUGO LINDBERG, BOOK, 2025

Where do the workers charged with “building the future” sleep after a long day’s—or night’s—work? On Barracks provides a tour of the vinyl sofas, labor law loopholes, facial recognition technologies, battery-powered sustainable development, contaminated soil, homesickness, despondency, and architectural detailing that shape life in a construction barrack. In a work that cuts across genres of critique, theory, inventory, drawing, and the travelogue, architect Hugo Lindberg and the invited contributors reflect upon Camp Albatros, a barrack camp in Ursviken, Skellefteå, Sweden, in Sapmí. Built to house construction workers building the (now-defunct) Northvolt Ett battery factor, the camp rather—as this new work of architectural theory from shows—serves as a dystopian blueprint for a far more permanent, more generalized living environment, and an architecture that is relevant far beyond the particulars of a (failed) “green transition.”
On Barracks is a research work by Hugo Lindberg, with contributions from Maria Wallstam, Andreas Inghammar, Secretary, Gabriel von Essen, Martin Berg, Joar Nordvall and Anna Zander. The book is designed by Tristan Main and published and by Secretary.
